Characterization of Titanium Metal Matrix Composites (Ti-MMC) Made Using Different Manufacturing Routes

The mechanical and morphological properties of the unidirectional metal matrix composite (MMC) in titanium alloy reinforced with continuous silicon carbide (SiC) fibres are investigated. lay-up manufacturing process known as Foil / Fibre (FF) was compared matrix-coated-fibre (CF) method which promises a better final shape reinforcing fibre net. Tensile tests were performed to measure performance manufactured MMCs both longitudinally transversely respect direction SiC fibres. Elastic behaviour investigated assumed orthotropic related spatial distribution MMC constituents: Titanium (Ti) matrix. This achieved using micromechanical modelling based on Finite Element (FE) calculations. FE carried out Representative Elementary Volume (REV) microstructure resolved by non-destructive analysis such X-Ray tomography. highlighted justified difference between laminates containing same amount reinforcement for unit volume but made following different routes. To compute overall laminate, each constituent an elastic isotropic heterogeneity during averaging. simplify assumption validated comparison experimental data characterization composites.
